How the Case Reached NAPTIP

The case was referred to the Niger State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after the incident was reported to the Niger State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Following the referral, the matter proceeded through the appropriate legal process before the Niger State High Court in Minna.

Suleiman was subsequently arraigned before Court 8, where he admitted committing the offence. His guilty plea formed part of the proceedings that resulted in his conviction.

Seven-Year Prison Sentence

After considering the case, the court found Suleiman guilty and sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment.

The conviction adds to the continuing legal efforts by Nigerian authorities to prosecute cases involving sexual violence against children. Such cases often require the involvement of law-enforcement agencies, child-protection institutions and the courts to ensure that allegations are properly investigated and determined through due process.

The case also highlights the importance of reporting suspected abuse and ensuring that cases involving children are taken before the appropriate authorities rather than being handled privately.

For the eight-year-old victim, the protection of her identity remains important. Nigerian media reports on cases involving children who are victims of sexual offences generally avoid publishing information that could directly identify them.
